At VA Fabrication we get excited about every project, but this one is a special one. One of our regular customers asked us to build a roll cage for this iconic sports car, and we can tell you: the result is something to be proud of.
The Challenges of the Shelby Cobra
The Shelby Cobra is a legendary vehicle known for its powerful performance and iconic design. But integrating a roll cage into such a classic requires a lot of engineering and precision. The main challenges in this project were the limited headroom, the KNAF/FIA certification and the fact that the fuel tank had to be removed and installed during the installation process.
A roll cage must not only ensure the safety of the driver and navigator, but must also meet strict FIA requirements. This made designing the roll cage for the Cobra extra challenging, as we had to respect both safety standards and not compromise the original dimensions of the vehicle.
The Design Process: 3D Scanning and Accuracy
After carefully measuring and fitting the Cobra, we started working on a 3D scan of the vehicle. This allowed us to create a design that fits perfectly within the tight dimensions of the Shelby, without compromising safety. The design was developed in collaboration with the work preparation, so that everything from A to Z was well planned before we went into production.
A Roll Cage That Meets FIA Requirements
The roll cage we designed for the Shelby Cobra not only meets KNAF/FIA requirements, but is also built to withstand the impact of a crash. It was crucial that the roll cage provide protection against unexpected incidents, even at high speeds and extreme conditions. By using the best materials and advanced manufacturing methods, we were able to create a structure that is both lightweight and strong.
The Assembly: Perfection in Execution
Once the design was finalized, the production of the roll cage went exactly as we had hoped. The installation of the roll cage was a precision engineering job, requiring us to carefully remove and install the fuel tank. This ensured that the roll cage was not only safe and secure, but also maintained the integrity of the vehicle.
